Case Study: Action Plan and Strategy to Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in a Non-Profit Supporting

Public Education

Background:

PENCIL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public education outcomes for students in Nashville’s underserved communities. In 2020, recognizing the critical importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their mission, PENCIL enlisted the support of Culture Shift Team Inc., a leading DEI consulting firm, to guide their efforts.

Approach:

Culture Shift Team Inc. brought a comprehensive approach to PENCIL's DEI assessment and action planning process. Leveraging proprietary tools, DEI data collection and analysis methodologies, training sessions, and consulting support, Culture Shift Team Inc. facilitated a thorough examination of PENCIL's DEI landscape.

  • CST Organizational Inclusion Assessment: Culture Shift Team Inc. conducted the organizational assessment, providing PENCIL with valuable insights into their current practices, policies, and culture related to DEI.

  • Reflective Listening Sessions: Culture Shift Team Inc. facilitated reflective listening sessions with board members and staff, creating a safe space for open dialogue and feedback on DEI within the organization.

  • One-on-One Interviews: Culture Shift Team Inc. conducted one-on-one interviews with leaders in public education to gain a deeper understanding of DEI challenges and opportunities in the field.

Action Plan Development:

Culture Shift Team shared findings and recommendations based on the insights gleaned from the assessment process and the expertise of Culture Shift Team Inc consultants. PENCIL developed a comprehensive action plan to advance DEI within the organization. This plan included establishing revisiting core values and principles that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of their work.

Progress and Outcomes:

In 2022, PENCIL revisited the DEI assessment tool to measure their progress and identify areas for improvement. PENCIL contracted with CST again to make significant strides in transforming their hiring and onboarding processes through an equity lens. By implementing more equitable policies and practices, PENCIL improved the diversity and inclusivity of their workforce and enhanced opportunities for underrepresented individuals.

Conclusion:

With the expertise and support of Culture Shift Team Inc., the Public Education Foundation has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within their organization and the broader public education sector. By continuing to prioritize DEI in their work, PENCIL is positioned to create a more equitable and inclusive educational system for all students.
